Does a DQ stand if a race needs to be reswum?

At a recent meet in the ACT the slowest heat of a 50m race had to be reswum because of a timing failure (no times recorded). 2 of the 3 swimmers in the heat were given infractions for incorrect stroke. They were allowed to reswim and DQ’d. Should these 2 swimmers have been allowed to reswum?

Hi Jenny,

Thank you for your enquiry. Can you please clarify for me – the swimmers were disqualified in the first swim, but only notified after the re-swim?

If so, all competitors in that initial heat were able to take their place in the re-swim, and should be allowed to compete in the second without the threat of a DQ, as the Referee had decided that the race was unfair to the competitors.

Only Rule Infractions observed in the re-swim should be disqualified.

Please let me know if my assumptions are incorrect, or you need further information.

Sam
